GMail Bug! Buggers!!
July 17, 2007 4 Comments
Noticed a very interesting bug in GMAIL.
Lets say my email id is amitdas@gmail.com
Now the bug – If I send a mail to amitdas@gmail.com, it reaches me… if I send it to amit.das@gmail.com it reaches me, if I send it to amitd.as@gmail.com or ami.tdas@gmail.com it still reaches me!
Hmm… problem with that? Well.. I don’t own amit.das@gmail.com, or amitd.as@gmail.com, for instance. So, my guess is that whoever owns that particular id would be receiving my mails. And I say that there have been a few mails that I end up being the unintended receipient of! Poor kid! Thats 1.7GB worth of mails in his mailbox! And a lot of crap that I am sure he doesn’t want to use! For me, it could be compromising my personal information! Woooo! I am scared!!
Anyways – the next thing I do is try and check if other email ids (a.mitdas etc) are available. Thankfully, they are not! It could mean that I am worrying unnecessarily. amitdas being taken my imply amit.das is also taken. BUT, it could also mean that someone figured it out before me, and is misusing this bug! or securing himself! Eitherways, the truth is out there!
Here is the response from Google Team, when I reported the bug (look at the list of most relevant questions in response to the reported bug! hmph!) –

Hi Amit, Gmail has many more such interesting features. Try sending a mail to amitdas+xyz@gmail.com! BTW, this is usually listed on most productivity sites as the MOST useful feature of gmail (Check out lifehacker.com)

Thanks! 🙂
Funny though.. Because I know a lot of people who deliberately send mails to amit.das@gmail.com and I end up getting them. On contacting them, they try to convince me that they sent it to the listed id! 😉 Beat that! 🙂
But thanks a ton.. This helps soothe my troubled soul! 😀

hmm…this is interesting and made me digg into it…
first, i tried it with my email and found it’s working as you said. then, after some google searching, i found this reply from google helpdesk.
google says,
“Gmail allows only one registration for any given username. Once you sign up for a particular username, any dot variations are made permanently unavailable for new accounts. If you believe that a message was sent to you accidentally, we suggest contacting the sender to inform him or her of an incorrect address.”
this can be verified by giving different combinations of an already registered name on the sign up page. gmail won’t allow you to do that. for e.g. if you have signed up as abcd@gamil.com, then the system won’t let you register with a.b.c.d@gmail.com or any other combination with the “abcd” string.
and this is the link for further information…
